National Air and Space Museum


The Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center near Washington Dulles International Airport is the companion facility to the museum on the National Mall, the building was in December 2003 and provides space for the Smithsonian to the thousands of aerospace artifacts not be exhibited on the National Mall can be displayed. The two sites together showcase the largest collection of aerospace artifacts in the world.



The center was named in honor of his major donors, and has to be presented at three levels of the large Boeing Aviation Hangar, in the aircraft. Visitors can choose between the aircraft and small artifacts in display cases on the ground on foot, and view aircraft hanging from the vaulted ceiling on elevated skywalks. Many engines, helicopters, ultra-lights and experimental flying machines are on display in a museum for the first time. In the aviation artifacts on display are the Lockheed SR-71 Blackbird, the fastest jet in the world, the Boeing Dash 80, the prototype of the 707, the Boeing B-29 Superfortress Enola Gay and the deHavilland Chipmunk aerobatic airplane.


The James S. McDonnell Space Hangar opened in November 2004 and displays hundreds of famous spacecraft, missiles, satellites and space-related small artifacts. The heart of the hangar space is the Space Shuttle Enterprise. Other artifacts space are the Gemini VII space capsule, the Mobile Unit quarantine after return of the crew of Apollo 11 are used, and a Redstone rocket.

In addition, the Donald D. Engen Observation Tower an excellent location, visitors can watch air traffic at Dulles Airport.

The center also offers the Airbus IMAX theater, flight simulators, food service, a museum shop, free tours lecturer, daily educational programs and school group tours and activities.



A special feature of the center is the National Aeronautics and Space Wall of Honor is located at the entrance to the center, the Wall of Honor a permanent reminder of the thousands of people who have helped our air and space heritage. The names of the honorees are inscribed in the air-foil-shaped wall, which will continue to grow in the coming years. A name can be yours!
